Here is a photo that is linked from the SBU athletics page www.GoBonnies.com that I believe was taken by my sports photographer colleague and the very talented Craig Melvin — it’s THE image of the night: Michael Davenport’s 3-point shot at 1.6 seconds left in the game against the A-10 Conference UNDEFEATED Duquesne. It was amazing to watch.
Those who are regular readers of this blog will have anticipated this post. The SBU Bonnies, having lost a very, very close game against Dayton on Wednesday, knocked the Duquesne Dukes off their 8-0 (A10) and 11-game-winning-streak pedestal. A game to be celebrated for sure!
What struck me most while watching the game this evening was the spirit and noise that filled the Reilly Center Arena on the campus of St. Bonaventure University. It has almost been a decade since the RC carried that sort of enthusiasm. As many of you may know, in 2001 ESPN’s Jay Balis named the St. Bonaventure University Reilly Center in the top 5 “most hostile homes” in the NCAA. The full list included:
- St. Bonaventure University, Reilly Center
- Duke University, Cameron Center
- University of Kansas, Allen Fieldhouse
- University of Arizona, McKale Center
- Michigan State, Breslin Center
Now I believe that the curse of the 2002-2003 season scandal has lifted and the spirit of the SBU team has begun to return. The students were on fire this evening and they made this alum proud. WE’RE BACK! I think this has a lot to do with the excellent coach we have now. Mark Schmidt “gets” St. Bonaventure and has done wonders with pulling together raw talent into a formidable team – perhaps the school’s first in a decade. His comments after the key SBU win over George Washington University at GW endeared the Bonnies Alums to the coach when he credited the SBU “6th Man” to the stellar showing of alums in DC who, according to Schmidt “bleed brown and white!” SO TRUE! (Go Bonas!)
Here is the “highlight reel” from SBU TV of the game — watch the amazing final play in the 9.6 seconds of the game and the student court-storming. I am told by the SBU athletics staff that ESPN has confirmed that Davenport’s game-winning 3-point-shot is on the “College Basketball Final” program tonight, likely to be echoed on ESPN tomorrow — keep an eye out!
I’ll see you Bonnies at the RC on Saturday for the LaSalle Game/Alumni Weekend, Look for the young friar screaming for the team! GO BONAS!
