This reflection is now available in Daniel P. Horan, OFM’s book Franciscan Spirituality for the 21st Century: Selected Reflections from the Dating God Blog and Other Essays, Volume One (Koinonia Press, 2013).

  1. Bottom line: No guns for humankind. Period.
If we have guns, then we need someone to shot. And if there is no one to shot, we will make up a story about some people who may want to harm us, we will believe our own made up story and then we will shot those “evildoers” and smoke them of their holes.
In the end we lie to ourselves and will continue making guns.

  2. Welcome to the fairy tale utopia that most New Age Franciscans and Socialist Catholics want to believe in. What you don’t see it? Come on everybody, another chorus of Kumbaya. Doesn’t it make you feel good to be so peaceful? Governments are the only true and good judges of what constitutes peace and justice. How dare families think they have the right to self defense when someone tries to murder their children in their beds. Let the almighty police take care of things. Too bad they didn’t get there in time to save anyone. Maybe we need more police. Yes, that’s the answer, a police state. We need to give up more freedoms to our “benevolent” government so they can control us. What peace and safety we would enjoy. And let’s take the Church’s statements out of context, like Protestants do with the Bible, so we can justify our disordered, misinformed, and illogical agenda and convert the gullible ones so they stop thinking for themselves too. Thinking is dangerous. Outlaw thinking. Let the government think for us. Repeat after me, “Guns are evil. Government with guns make them good.” Sieg Heil, Comrades! See you in Auschwitz.

  3. I would bet that the official Church stance is not quite what this article implies. Self defense is not a sin as far as I know.

Poster Tim Branson is right. Let’s just all sit around, holding hands and singing, and let the chips fall where they may re our safety. That wonderful “protector”, aka the Government, will keep us all safe.
